Mission

As part of Yoowarl Koorl: ReconciliAction and Indigenous Futures Showcase, Studio AGDX was tasked with creating a two-part experience—a motion graphic and a VR installation—highlighting Dale Kickett’s journey with the Fremantle Dockers.

Outcome

Based on Dale Kickett’s interview on his football career in relation to Dockers, an immersive, narrative-driven VR experience was created, that expands upon the motion graphic—translating Dale Kickett’s career timeline into an interactive, spatial environment that encourages user agency and emotional engagement so users can connect with Dale and his story and connect with the human side of Dockers history.

Key Highlights of My Contribution

Style Guide

I contributed to the visual design of the project by creating a brief style guide to be followed by. Fonts and colours were tied to the identity of Docker’s logo colours and the overarching theme of Footy. This helped our team maintain visual consistency and cohesion across the entire project

User-Flow

Tasked with the end-to-end UX/UI design of the VR experience, I considered how user interactions, environment, and interface would integrate within a 3D space. To map this out, I created a user flow diagram that informed the subsequent storyboard and visual mockups.

Storyboard and Mockups

To visually communicate the look and feel of the interactions to my team, I created mockups that were later developed into a storyboard to illustrate the overall flow.

Spatial Design and User Experience

Based on further feedback, we pivoted to a clean, white, minimalistic but futuristic dome environment for Dale to talk in. We also shifted from deliberate timeline interactions to a more spatially aware experience where storytelling unfolds through movement and exploration. Users interact with objects by placing them in front of Dale to reveal parts of his story. Once all objects have been used, the full narrative is unlocked, and users conclude the experience by kicking a celebratory footy through the goalposts.

Conclusion

The final VR exhibit featured a futuristic, immersive dome environment enriched with sound, animation, and interactive elements. It invited users to explore Dale Kickett’s journey at their own pace, fostering a multisensory and emotionally resonant narrative experience. This project pushed me to rethink spatial UX and how interaction models function within immersive 3D environments. It also deepened my understanding of accessibility and emotional UX, encouraging a more intentional approach to cognitive clarity and inclusive feedback systems.
